Blackwood Gazette #45: New Novel Imagines a World Without Blackwood

by Alex Grosset, Arts and Entertainment

23/7- What would our society be like if not for the discovery of Blackwood? That’s the question posed by author Clement Aldridge Kene in his new novel, The Gutted Earth.

The book takes place in a fantasy world, in the fictional land called Almeria. In it, humankind finds itself on the verge of a world dominated by steam based technology, only to discover such a thing would be unsustainable for more than a few years.

“The only reason our own technology has been able to develop along steam based lines is Blackwood,” said Kene in a press release. “Blackwood isn’t a naturally occurring substance, but an alchemically created one. Now, imagine a world where Blackwood didn’t exist…we’d quickly find that a steam based society could not last more than a few decades. Entire forests would be leveled for wood, coal mines depleted. Where would the world turn?”

Kene writes that his first instinct was to imagine a purely electric based world, but that idea was scrapped.

“With electricity, you’d still need a fuel source to produce it,” said Kene. “So I did some research and found a real world analogue, in Sarnwain’s recent developments with refining oil.”

In the book, humanity develops the ‘internal combustion engine’, and technology develops along oil based lines. The results are horrific.

“We know from our own failed attempts at developing oil based tech that fuel combustion is less than savory,” said Kene. “Imagine a world where everyone has an auto powered not by the soothing pops and bubbles of a boiler, but the grating, thunderous boom of a mechanical beast burning oil and coughing thick, soot ridden smoke into the air.”

What makes the novel even more disturbing, Kene warns, is that the world imagined in his book could be something that actually happens in the next two hundred years.

“Blackwood, theoretically, is a renewable resource. The problem is, the alchemical process has been lost; no one knows how to make more. And we’ve all heard the rumors that, as our influence spreads across the globe, so does the need for Blackwood. Blackwood may burn clean, and it may burn slow, but it won’t burn forever.”

The Gutted Earth will be released serially, and makes its debut next month in Stories of the Strange Monthly.

Blackwood Gazette #40: New Details Emerge on Waystation Bravo Incident

by Chester Seaton, News

16/7-A more complete picture of what happened on Waystation Bravo is taking shape as new information is provided by salvage teams and authorities investigating the deaths of several people found aboard the station.

The salvage team reports that they have discovered a strange device of unknown origin built directly onto the station’s main boiler system. They claim the device is unlike any known manufactured machine typically found on the Waystation platforms, and the device’s function remains a mystery.

“It is heavily damaged,” said the lead investigator. “Probably due to some sort of explosion, so it isn’t as though we can just flip it on and see what it does. Even if it wasn’t damaged, simply flipping it on would be an extremely foolish thing to do.”

As for the bodies, authorities on Waystation Echo report that the body of the woman discovered matches the description of an individual spotted in the company of another woman involved in an altercation at the station’s saloon. This woman, described as being over six feet tall, having long black hair, dressed in a trail coat and armed to the teeth, has provided investigators with a new lead. What’s more, patrons of the bar say the woman introduced herself as ‘Arufina’ to the saloon’s bouncer, a Rommsbachian man named Klaus Klaudhopper. As we reported earlier, both were involved in early search efforts for the station, and were believed to have gone missing. Both are said to have been carrying revolvers.

Friends of Klaudhopper say that the man was planning on making his way to the colonies. Triumvirate Authorities have issued a warrant on both Klaudhopper and the woman known as ‘Arufina’, as well as three other unidentified women seen in her company and dressed in similar attire, and are focusing their search on the colonial ports in New Crowndon.

Blackwood Gazette #38: De Santana Refining Attacked; Owner’s Heiress Suspected

Chester Seaton, News

14/7-The estate of Blackwood magnate Marco De Santana is on lock-down today as officials state that several of his holdings came under attack over the weekend.

The rash of violence began late last week, when several armed men raided a distribution center on the outskirts of the Monteddorian capital. The culprits gained access to the facility using a De Santana Refining airship.

“We were completely caught off guard,” said the only survivor of the raid, whose name is being withheld for his own protection. “There was no warning. No reports of a ship going missing or being hijacked. The ship was even scheduled, and the men wore the uniform of De Santana’s fleet. They disembarked from the ship and just kind of blended in.”

It was then, officials say, that the attackers struck, killing everyone but the lone factory worker. They then loaded the two empty ships at the site full of Blackwood, and stole another that was completely loaded up. They then sabotaged the equipment and flew away. Since then, several other De Santana owned locations throughout Monteddor have been hit.

The Monteddorian Air Guard claims that it has no concrete idea on who the culprits were, but they believe the raid was led by an insider. De Santana himself, however, has an idea.

“It’s Yolanda! My sweet little girl, making her move. She’s looking to usurp me. That’s why she didn’t destroy the factory outright, just crippled it. Believe me, I recognize the M.O. It’s exactly what I did when I took over!”

When asked if he was worried, De Santana laughed.

“Of course not! I taught her everything she knows, but I didn’t teach her everything I know. I have no doubt that I’ll be able to bring her to heel before long. I kind of have to admit, though, part of me is rooting for the old girl. She IS my daughter, after all. Ha ha!”

Blackwood Gazette #36: Bodies Found on Waystation Bravo

by Chester Seaton, News

9/7-The mystery surrounding Waystation Bravo and the disappearance of its denizens deepens today, as new reports indicate that several bodies have been discovered. Authorities say that the dead are the result of gunshots, and the time of death varies over the course of the day before the storm concealing the station disappeared.

“None of the victims have been identified, but we are working under the assumption that none of them were residents of the station when it went missing,” said Captain Lester Krietch, the commanding officer of the team sent to investigate and salvage the station. “The bodies include four men and one woman, whom we believe were on opposite sides of whatever conflict occurred.”

The investigators also revealed that the men were killed by rounds from a revolver, while the woman was killed with a flintlock. While several flintlocks and muskets were found at the scene, no sign of a revolver was found, aside from bullets pulled from the bodies and several casings.

“It is our belief that whoever the deceased woman worked for removed the weapon from the scene, assuming the woman in question possessed a weapon at all,” Krietch explained.

When asked about the rumors of a ship fleeing the scene as rescue ships arrived, the Captain was reserved.

“We are following every lead known to us at this time, including said ship,” said Krietch. “If such a ship does exist, it is imperative that we find it. We are also issuing warrants for personnel known to be aboard ships that disappeared during the initial search. We will be providing news and law enforcement agencies on the main land and in the colonies with details on those persons in the coming days.”

Blackwood Gazette #35-Klankenvroot Workers On Strike; Complain about Salary

by Hunter O’Leary, Business

8/7- Production at Klankenvroot Industries has ground to a halt today after more than two-thirds of the work force walked out of the factory where Ivan Klankenvroot’s prototype for a commercial fixed wing air craft is being built. The workers cite tyrannical working conditions and lack of payment for their labor as primary factors.

“We haven’t been paid for two weeks,” said Upton Monroe, a floor worker acting as spokesperson for the workers on strike. “They told us to knuckle up, to think about our national pride. And we did at first. National pride is good and all, but I can’t feed my kids with it. You can ask them yourself, they were working down in the assembly lines.”

Analysts say that the process of melting down and recirculating hundreds of thousands of pounds of the nation’s gold has led to the company’s failure to pay its employees.

“We haven’t paid them quite simply because we are unable to,” said a representative for Klankenvroot. “Rest assured, however, that we are carefully tracking the hours of each and every worker, and they will be reimbursed accordingly once the financials are in order. None of this matters of course, if Rinkenbach gets his bird in the air before us. So it’s in their best interest to get back to work.”

“Don’t make me laugh,” Monroe said, when presented with the representative’s statement. “Those numbers types make a living by finding ways to cut costs. And those costs usually come out of the employee’s paycheck. Even if they meant what they are saying, you can’t honestly expect me to entrust my family’s livelihood to their record keeping. Would you?”

It is rumored that Klankenvroot is looking for ways to get the workers back in line. If he cannot, it is believed that he may start searching for new workers.

Blackwood Gazette #34: Interview w/ Doctor Veronica Trenum

by Adella Chatelaine, Investigative Reports

7/7-While visiting the Waystation network late last week to cover the aftermath of the Station Bravo incident, I had an opportunity to meet with Doctor Veronica Trenum, who is currently on her way to the colonies to investigate an important new archeological sight in Lelina. She graciously agreed to sit down for a short Q&A.

Chatelaine: Doctor Trenum, allow me to start by saying that I am a devout follower of your work.

Trenum: Thank you. I’ve read your work, and follow it as well. You deserved that Bulloch award, if you ask me.

Chatelaine: Well, winning it was enough, even if they took it away in the end. Bastards. Anyway, the ruins in Lelina. What are you hoping to find there?

Trenum: The ruins in Lelina offer a unique opportunity to shed light on the culture of the prehistoric indigenous people in the region. We have very little to go on as, unfortunately, the entire southern third of the continent is bereft of human life.

C: Is that something you are hoping to shed some light on?

T: Most definitely. We have evidence that people once inhabited the entirety of the Newlands, but the most recent example of these southern cultures dates back to around 5000 years ago. Equally mysterious is the fact that the northern cultures haven’t migrated and populated the region in that time. We’ve tried asking, but Crowndon’s near genocide while colonizing the region has left the northern cultures understandably close lipped about such things; not that they were very forthcoming about such things beforehand.

C: 5000 years…that’s around the time of the Alchemical Rift isn’t it?

T: Precisely. To date, we haven’t found any evidence suggesting the Rift (which itself is still largely theoretical) and the disappearance of half a continent’s worth of civilization on the other side of the planet are connected. Such theories have even led to good scientists being ostracized. Even I am hesitant to speak of a possible connection, but the descriptions of the Lelina site are once again raising the question.

C: Why is that?

T: If the reports are to be believed, the site resembles similar ruins found in Sarnwain (which I’ve studied), and in Monteddor, near the Blackwood Grove.

C: Interesting. I can’t remember ever having read about these sites.

T: You wouldn’t have. The information hasn’t been released to the public yet.

At this point, doctor Trenum stops the interview, unwilling to divulge anymore. She suggests I give my notes to a man she knows and trusts that works the Waystation skydock. She then offers me the opportunity of a lifetime: to travel with her to Lelina and chronicle her findings there.

I have accepted the offer, and hope that Mr. Merchant, the owner of the Gazette, will retain me as a correspondent despite the lack of prior approval. If not, then too bad. I’m going anyway.

Editor’s Note: Upon receiving the news of Miss Chatelaine’s decision to travel with Doctor Trenum, I composed the following reply: Are you kidding me? I’ve known reporters who would literally kill for an exclusive scoop like this. I would have fired you if you DIDN’T take it. Excellent work!

Blackwood Gazette #29: Massive Search for Waystation Bravo Launched; Several Airships Gone Missing

By Chester Seaton, News

26/6- Earlier this week, several ships, both air and sea based, set out from Waystations Alpha, Charlie, and Echo to help search for signs of Waystation Bravo, which disappeared from the Skyway circuit two weeks ago.

While the majority of the ships searched the waters along the circuit route, several reportedly broke away from the main search flotillas and made way for the strange storm that still has scientists befuddled.

While most of the search and rescue ships returned within the day, several did not. Port Authority aboard the remaining stations  report that the missing ships were those seen heading toward the storm. Further details on the crews of these ships are few, but they are said not to be regulars on the stations, with the exception of one Klaus Klaudhopper, a well liked bouncer from Waystation Echo.

Witnesses say that Klaudhopper was last seen in the presence of a tall woman that bar regulars described as being armed to the teeth. Several eye witnesses to an altercation the day before the search parties left say that the woman in question brandished silver revolvers. This has led to wild speculation about the involvement of the legendary Ephemeral Cartographers. Others still claim they heard the woman claim allegiance to the Scarlet Circle, though they seem to have no idea why a group of assassins would be looking for the wreckage of a waystation.

The Scarlet Circle was recently implicated in the strange death of Thedore Francis Williamsburg of Thorndyke the Third, the Governor of Walsh, two months ago.

While this potent mixture of scientific mystery, mass disappearance, and alleged involvement of not one but two secretive organizations may prove tempting fodder for the imagination, we here at the Gazette stress that readers take new details on this story with a grain of salt. Until we have hard evidence, most of these details remain conjecture at this point.

Blackwood Gazette #27: Who is Paying for the Triumvirate’s Proposed Super-Prison?

by Adella Chatelaine, Investigative Reports

24/6- Ever since Triumvirate Authorities announced their plans to build a massive prison-ship in the Barrier Ocean earlier this month, people have wondered how exactly it will be paid for. A recent tax hike throughout Crowndon seemed to indicate that the common citizen would be the prime contributor, but the lack of a corresponding tax in NorEaster and Monteddor indicates other wise.

Many theorize that the Crowndon tax hike has less to do with the prison, and everything to do with the recent Tuna Heist perpetrated by Roderck La Pierre that left a large percentage of the nation’s gold reserves temporarily unusable thanks to the smell (which, if rumors are true, has created an economic destabilization that Crowndon has refused to publicly acknowledge.) It is likely some tax dollars will be used, but after plans for the prison were recently released, the questions only grew louder.

According to the plans, which were shown in a private showing at the recent Innovation and Industry Conference, the prison will consist of three retrofitted Crowndonian warships, welded together to create a single super-structure. The Crowndon Navy insists that using these three retired ships cuts down on a large percentage of the cost, but questions still remain. How much will the retrofits cost? What about the crew, and maintenance? And more importantly, how much Blackwood will it take to power and move the mass of such a large structure? None of these issues have been addressed, and to date, my inquiries have been met with a canned dismissal, or outright ignored.

The Gazette has been doing some digging, and thanks to some inside sources has followed a paper trail leading to evidence showing the prison is being funded by private investors. Among these investors, we have learned, are several Monteddorian crime lords, including the notorious Alejandro Julianos. Several wealthy industrialists in Crowndon and politicians in NorEaster were also named in our source.

This information, if true, raises several alarming issues. If the funding of the prison is as privatized as it appears, there is the possibility that it may not be used solely for the incarceration of criminals found guilty by the Triumvirate judiciary. One great fear is that investors could use their wealth to turn the prison into a place where “problems” go to disappear.

Whatever the truth, rest assured that the Gazette will maintain a watchful eye on this story.

Blackwood Gazette #26: Rigel Rinkenbach and Pixie Sinclaire Spotted in Oeil de Fleur Concurrently; Rumors Fly

by Alex Grosset, Arts and Entertainment (and now Celebrity Gossip, Apparently)

23/6- The tabloids are in a frenzy today as NorEaster’s favorite former power couple, Rigel Rinkenbach and Pixie Sinclaire, were both seen in Oeil de Fleur last week. This prompted rumors about the possibility of the estranged duo getting back together.

Sources indeed confirm that Rinkenbach and Sinclaire both were in Oeil de Fleur last week; Rinkenbach was spotted at the popular brothel Big Bessie’s Burlesque, sipping Absinthe and discussing something with a group of fellow alchemists. Sinclaire, meanwhile, was reportedly visiting the death bed of an old war comrade, on the other side of town.

Despite not actually being seen anywhere approaching the immediate vicinity of one another, the imagination of the citizenry has gone completely mental. Many approach the rumors with innocent optimism:

“Oh, I hope it’s true!” said Valina Neri, a baker in south end. “They were so fun to read about when they were together…two of the world’s greatest minds, traveling the world, getting in adventures…I miss those days.”

While others have taken the non-news to daunting levels of psychosis:

“I have been waiting in this alley for three days,” said one man, who didn’t offer his name. “I am hoping to get a glimpse of Rigel and Pixie together. When I do, I am going to give them this diorama I made.”

Trust me, dear readers, you  do not want to know what the diorama depicted or what was holding it together. On another note, the alley was nowhere near either location. It was outside my domicile, which disturbs me greatly.

Correction: In issue 24, we misspelled the name of our meteorologist source. His name is “Bretodeau”, not “Bredoteau.”

Blackwood Gazette #25: Von Grimm Gang Terrorizes Colonial Frontier

VON_GRIMMWANTED

by Chester Seaton, News

19/6- Doctor Argyle Von Grimm, a.k.a. the Mad Mechanist of Mosaille, has reared his head once more, this time along the frontier of the Imperial Colonies. Even worse, he has brought a gang of mechanically enhanced malcontents with him.

For the last month, Colonial authorities report that Von Grimm has attacked, occupied, or reduced to ash at least fifteen frontier townships.

“He may go on about etiquette and protocol, but he’s little more than a mad dog with a doctorate,” said Marshall Nathaniel Harper. “He rides into town with his gang, all of ’em missing arms or legs or sometimes eyes, all replaced with clockwork appendages. He goads some poor sod to anger, gives a speech about manners, and then proceeds to wrecking the place. A real villain, that one.”

The Colonial Marshals are at a loss on how to deal with Von Grimm and his gang. To date, they have sent several posses after the miscreant, and to date, each of these posses have turned up buried to their necks in the sand, their heads swollen from the desert sun. Law men refuse to deal with the situation out of fear, and many settlers have started migrating back east.

“There ain’t nothing out there worth dealing with a man like that,” said Sally Sommerfield, mother of sixteen children and grandmother of eight, four times widowed, two at the hands of Von Grimm. “He doesn’t just destroy towns. Once saw him kick a puppy. Crossed the street to do it, too.”

Von Grimm’s reign of terror has put a sizable dent in the trade of furs, coal, and other goods from the frontier. Desperate to put an end to it, the Colonial government has issued a 150,000 dollar bounty for Von Grimm or any member of his gang, dead or alive, and a 10,000 dollar bounty for any leads to the bandit’s hideout that bear fruit. To date, neither bounty has been paid.
