Blackwood Gazette #248- Klaus Klaudhopper Leads Daring Assault on Walsh Penitentiary, Absconds with Assassination Suspect Arufina Villanova

By Jeanne Dupris, Nor Eastern EIC

20/7/282-Crowndon has suffered another embarrassing blow this weekend after the prime suspect in the Pillar Assassinations, Arufina Villanova, escaped from Walsh penitentiary. The escape occurred during a full scale assault on the complex by associates of the assassin, Crowndon officials say.

“It all started around midnight,” the warden of the facility told us. “There was a disturbance in the east wing, a fire. When officers responded to the fire, all hell broke loose. Inmates all over the prison were released from their cells.”

In the ensuing chaos, the prisons spotlights were focused on the prison grounds. As a result, no one noticed the air ship entering the prison’s air space.

“Just when we started getting the inmates under control, these people come rappelling down into the yard, firing six guns,” the warden said. “They took out an entire platoon of my guards before even touching the ground. Around eight of them were women, wearing leather jackets like the one Villanova wore when taken into custody. Too bad no one noticed that fact until after it was all over.

“There was one man with them, a short guy with a red scarf. He had two of those infernal six shooters. TWO! He might as well have been made of bullets!”

After setting down in the yard, the group cut their way into the facility. The warden says that attempts to seal off sections of the prison were ineffective.

“I think they may have had someone on the inside, who started the fire and sabotaged locking mechanisms on the gates between wings. They marched right through the prison, practically unopposed except for a few poor souls who fell under the fire of their six guns. All we had were flints! Bloody flints! Why flints are still the standard amongst law enforcement and military in this day and age is beyond me.”

All told, the warden says the assault lasted ten minutes.

“It was so strange. They entered the solitary wing, where we had Villanova locked up, and never came back out. We followed them, found Villanova missing. A few minutes later everything was under control. The air ship disappeared after dropping the attackers; far as we know, it never picked them back up. Just damn strange.”

Given the suspect involved, it is believed that the people who attacked the prison were members of the Scarlet Circle (which the Triumvirate Authority denies even exists). The description of the man matches that of known Villanova associate Klaus Klaudhopper. Both are suspected of involvement in the Waystation Bravo disaster, and Klaudhopper is wanted in the colonies for suspected involvement with the Von Grimm gang. He was last seen fleeing the colonies aboard what is believed to be the Pernicious Platitude, a pirate air ship belonging to former Crowndonian Admiral Roderick Beauchamp La Pierre.

Blackwood Gazette #240-Pillar Assassinations Breakthrough as Yves Law Enforcement Takes Suspect into Custody

23/5/282- A major development took place concerning the murders of several prominent members of Triumvirate society this weekend, after officers in Yves took a suspect into custody Saturday night.

The arrest happened due to the efforts of the recently suspended Inspector Pavetta Janvier, who had been working on the case since it broke several months ago.

“I was put onto the trail of the suspect by an anonymous source,” Janvier told us. “It wasn’t much to go on at first, but with a little bit of effort and hostile persuasion, I was led to a small living space in Autumn Nook, on the south side.”

The living space, Janvier says, appears to have been used as a safe house of sorts for several individuals over the course of the last decade.

“The scene inside that apartment looks less like a crime scene and more like an archeological dig. The space is covered with various notes written in a hundred different hands and languages. The wooden walls and posts are marked with various tallies and archaic symbols—two of these sets appear to be some kind of macabre scoreboard. The one on the left seems to have won, a bloody hand print and aborted scratching on the right the only grisly evidence of what might have happened to the loser.”

The current occupant, and suspect, was found sleeping within when officers entered. Despite being caught off guard, apprehending the suspect proved costly.

“Traps had been set up throughout the small space leading from all points of ingress to where the suspect slept,” Janvier said. “They were densely packed, well hidden, and meticulously designed so as not to hurt the person who set them. We lost two men outright, and another four were injured, before the suspect even woke up and joined the fray.”

The suspect, a woman in her late twenties, standing over six feet tall and wearing long, raven black hair, was roused from her sleep. She pulled a six gun and opened fire, killing six more men.

“She was subdued while reloading,” Janvier says. “One of our officers was lucky enough to rush into the room and avoid setting something off. There was a scuffle, and he earned a broken nose for his trouble, but the woman was subdued.”

Further details about the woman in custody are being withheld at the moment, but that hasn’t stopped theories. The fact that she wielded a six gun and matches almost perfectly the description of a woman seen shooting up a town in the colonies last year has led many to speculate the suspect is one Arufina Villanova, an alleged assassin with the secretive and legendary Scarlet Circle.

As rewards for her efforts, Inspector Pavetta Janvier has been fully reinstated to her position.

Blackwood Gazette #236- Former Inspector says Summit Attackers are Target, Not Perpetrator of Pillar Assassinations

2/5/282- The investigation surrounding the deaths of several prominent community pillars around the empire grows ever more muddled this week. Leaks from within Crowndonian and Nor Eastern law enforcement agencies seem to suggest that the leadership within said agencies have been tampering with evidence and sweeping certain facts about the victims under the rug.

According to an anonymous source, whose credentials have been confirmed by Chief Investigator Pavetta Janvier, the working theory that the murders had been enacted by agents connected to the Summit Attack last year is not only false, but backwards.

“The officer in question, who has since quit the service and gone into hiding, has told me that our current investigation has been led down a path of deception,” Inspector Janvier said. “According to him, those killed were not targets of the Summit Attackers, but heavily involved with them.”

The ramifications of this implication are staggering, to say the least. It would mean that not only did the victims have a connection to the attacks, but that those still living and associated with them and currently under the protection of various law enforcement and private security firms may have direct connections with the organization that nearly wiped out the Triumvirate leadership last year.

“If this is indeed the case,” Janvier said, “Then it is the first big break we’ve had concerning the entity working to break down the covenants that hold our society together. It is my belief that those we feel may be targets for assassination be detained, questioned, and investigated for possible connections to the so called Men in Blue.”

Such an investigation may not be so easy, however. The commissioners and chiefs of the various departments throughout Crowndon have denied any such accusations, and Inspector Janvier’s own Chief, Jean Marceau, was quick to dismiss Janvier’s claims.

“The idea that our departments, or the victims of these crimes, are complicit in some vast, society crumbling conspiracy is without base,” Marceau said. “We’ve placed Janvier under administrative leave for her seditious comments, pending an investigation into her own activities. While I do not personally suspect her of wrongdoing, that such a promising officer could be easily led down this preposterous rabbit hole is troubling, and illustrative of the stress this case and what it means to the Triumvirate is placing on all involved.”

Blackwood Gazette #227-High Profile Murders Mean High Profits for Private Security Firms, Recent Reports Say

By Hunter o’Leary, Business

23/3/282- It would seem that the recent murders of high profile business men across Crowndon has driven many others to seek the protection of private security firms, if the recent earnings reports of several such firms are any indication.

Phalanx Protection, a firm based in Toring, told me that they’ve seen an ‘unprecedented’ rise in clients over the last month.

“We’ve had to start turning potential clients away,” said Yerman Ghilly, the CEO of Phalanx. “We may be a large firm, but our resources are limited, and if we are to continue providing our clients the elite level of service we promise, we must make sure our personnel aren’t spread too thin.”

Yerman went on to say that they’ve begun referring clients to Watcher’s Heights, an up and coming firm based in Walsh.

“These homicides have proven to be an enormous boon to our business,” said Samuel Harding, CEO of Watcher’s Heights. “Before last month, we were barely more than a start-up. Now we have clients from Toring and Sau Anoit. It’s been difficult keeping up with the growth of our customer base, but we are quickly hiring and training a healthy batch of fresh recruits, mainly veterans of the Dividing War and law enforcement officers eager for a more lucrative career.”

Some of these firms claim to have already seen some action. Crown Security, a prominent firm stationed in the capital which has made a name for itself protecting everyone from celebrities to foreign dignitaries reported that one of their teams foiled an attempt on an unnamed client two weeks ago.

“We succeeded in preventing the murder of a high profile client with connections to one of the previous victims,” said Charles Cooper, one of Crown Security’s veteran chiefs. “Where we failed, however, was in putting the assailant down. We won’t make that mistake again, and given the ferocity and determination of the suspect, we believe a second attempt will be inevitable. This

“The fight was brutal; it seemed less like an assassination and more like a crusade. I lost two highly trained men. If I were to give similar firms a piece of advice, it would be to ensure they get the job done. Whoever these people are, they aren’t messing about.”

Blackwood Empire #224-Authorities Link Multiple Homicides To Death of Yves Business Man; Believe It’s “Only the First Wave of This Violence”

By Chester Seaton, News

29/2/282-Law enforcement officials in Walsh, Toring, and Yves today revealed that a recent string of anonymous tips led them to the scenes of several homicides over the course of the last three weeks. While details were kept to a minimum, it is believed the homicides are linked somehow.

“All of the victims are prominent business owners with ties to each other,” said Inspector Donovan Wick of Toring. “Each of them was killed in similar fashion, and in each case it appears the murders were followed by the environment being ransacked and objects of value being stolen.”

While Inspector Wick didn’t elaborate on what these ‘objects of value’ might be, his counterpart in Yves, Pavetta Janvier, told us that files pertaining to the victims’ business interests had been taken.

“It is my belief that this is only the first wave of this violence,” Inspector Janvier said. “Whoever killed these men was looking for information on their associates and their holdings. This isn’t just about killing, it is about striking a blow to their hold on power. I suspect a vast criminal conspiracy of murder and subterfuge is at play.”

Law enforcement agencies across the Crowndon Empire have dispatched personnel to contact and if necessary protect those they believe are in danger. As for who might be conducting such a grisly business?

“We have several theories,” Inspector Wick said. “But this early in the investigation, I feel it would be unwise to share them. If these crimes are connected, as we believe, we can say that whoever the perpetrators are they are well organized and coordinated.”

We also learned that Inspectors Janvier and Wick had taken several witnesses into custody, but no other information was provided.

Blackwood Empire #222- Prominent Business Man Murdered; Mysterious Figure Seen Fleeing Crime Scene

By Chester Seaton, News

24/2/282- Law enforcement officials in Yves revealed today that a prominent fixture in the country’s business community was found murdered yesterday morning. In addition to the murder, the victim’s office had been ransacked.

“It’s all very strange,” said Inspector Pavetta Janvier. “Many of my colleagues seem to think the evidence points to a burglary gone wrong, but the precision of the injuries which killed him seem to indicate a professional killer. Further supporting my theory is that nothing of immediate value was taken; the only thing that seems to be missing are files related to the victim’s business interests.”

An eyewitness to the events paints a strange picture of what happened the night of the murder.

“I was on my way home,” the eyewitness, whom the police are calling Jacque, said in his report. “I heard shouting from the third floor of the building, then three loud bangs, like gunshots. Frightened, I ducked into the alley between [the victim’s] building and my own. I thought I was hidden, when I heard a shuffling on the fire egress above me. I looked up and saw an individual, possibly a woman, in a long overcoat staring down at me. I thought I was done for! But she simply jumped from the egress to the roof of the next building and disappeared into the night.”

Inspector Janvier tells us that the department is treating this testimony with caution.

“I sounds a bit fantastical,” she said. “A shadowy figure, leaping from building to building. My captain believes the witness has read too many penny dreadfuls, of which I can say there were several in the witness’s office.”

Inspector Janvier said they would continue to follow other leads, but that those leads could not be shared in detail at this point. More on this story as it develops.
