Blackwood Gazette #253-Assassination of Government Officials In Monteddor Sparks Renewed Unrest

By Isairo Palantes, Monteddorian Correspondent

2/8/282-After the assassination of the Governor of a small fiefdom in the Salasan Territory in Monteddor last week, a mob of angry farmers in the area stormed a government armory, likely with the aim of arming themselves for another rebellion. A similar situation happened last month, following the assassination of a governor in Govanna.

In addition, a week before the Govanna assassination, another, lower level official was killed. All three were killed by a single shot from a very far distance.

“It is our belief that all three murders were committed by the same individual,” said a Desantana Security spokesperson. “We also believe the deaths are related to the assassination of Captain Julian Rojas during his retirement ceremony on the ninth day of Fifth Month. We also believe that given the long amount of time between incidents, and the precision of the strikes, that these attacks are personal. We are currently going through each victim’s background in search of a link.”

As it turns out, this reporter did a bit of digging on his own and didn’t have to go very far. All four men served on the same ship during the Dougherty Rebellion last year. They were appointed to their positions by Alejandro Julianos after the bombardment of the small town of Sanado Flores in a bold but ultimately unsuccessful attempt to kill the rebellion leader, Dougherty.

Desantana Security officials declined to comment on this finding. They also stress that these assassinations are in no way related to the Pillar Assassinations in Crowndon, though they do admit that the similar nature of the two events is unnerving.

“The superstitious sort might say there’s some sort of societal sea change in the air,” said the Desantana Security spokesperson. “A ridiculous notion to be sure, but the Monteddorian people are a superstitious lot. Give any idea, no matter how idiotic, enough believers and it can be a threat. That’s probably why the last two kills led to revolt. They see it as a second chance for their rebellion.”

Desantana Security says that it will divert substantial resources to finding and stopping the killer.

Blackwood Gazette #238-Former Julianos Captain Assassinated While Giving Retirement Speech

11/5/282- The Monteddorian Empire is in shock today, after one of its most valiant heroes was brutally assassinated during a speech Monday night. The cowardly murder was witnessed by hundreds who’d gathered to celebrate the retirement of Captain Julian Rojas.

“He was standing upon the stage one minute, recollecting more than a lifetime’s worth of stories and achievements,” the captain’s wife, Estera Rojas said. “His voice filled the room as we all listened. He had that sort of presence. And then, nothing. His head…it…he was gone. His voice was gone. His presence. The room was dead quiet, and empty.”

Witnesses say that no one heard the shot that took the captain’s life, but evidence suggests that the killer fired a shot from outside the hall where Rojas was speaking. Investigators say they have yet to find any evidence of the shooter on nearby rooftops or within buildings.

“It is our theory that the shot came from the south, through an open window,” said Pietro Regas, Chief Inspector on the case. “We’ve determined the caliber of the round used in the assassination…someone should have heard the shot, even if the shooter was using a suppressor. We’re canvasing the area, but so far no civilians claim to have heard anything.”

Something like a gunshot was reported around the time of the murder, however that report was from several blocks away.

“For someone to have made the shot from the area where the gunshot was reported…I can’t even fathom it,” Regas said. “It would mean we’re looking for a shooter more skilled than anyone in even Julianos’ elite guard. They wouldn’t just have to adjust for the distance, which is plausible…but there are buildings in the way. The shooter would have had to find a spot with line of sight through the windows of several buildings. The thought of finding and detaining someone with that sort of talent and determination makes my blood run cold.”

Regas refused to comment on any possibility of connection with the Pillar Assassinations in Crowndon.

Captain Rojas served in the Ballantine air fleet for nearly thirty years, fighting in three wars and several small engagements over the course of his career. His final military command was aboard the Julianos flag ship Panther’s Reign, where he ordered the bombardment of Sanado Flores in an effort to stamp out the Dougherty rebellion.

10/7- The Monteddorian Empire bleeds today, as it has just been confirmed that the small town of Sanado Flores, located on the southern bank of the Teardrop river in the Valley of Wisps, has been completely leveled and its populace almost entirely wiped out.

Details are scarce at the moment, but we have been told by Monteddorian military authorities is that the rebel leader known only as Dougherty had gone to ground in the valley, along with several of her most important officers and a sizable contingent of her force. Upon learning of her whereabouts, Alejandro Julianos ordered his personal fleet to fly directly to the town. It is said that his own personal flag ship, Panther’s Reign, began the bombardment.

The regular Monteddorian military claims they had no knowledge of the engagement, and that Julianos acted of his own volition. Military leaders around the Triumvirate have already condemned the action, and protests have erupted throughout the nations of the Nor Eastern Empire. Ferdand Govanna, the governor of the province in which Sanado Flores was located, has called for martial action against Julianos and his forces.

There has been no word as to the success of the strike, or whether or not Dougherty was killed. Regardless of its outcome, it is apparent that Julianos has earned nothing but ill will, even amongst his own countrymen.
